How to become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer?

Choosing AME (Aircraft Maintenance Engineering) as a career path is excellent for students interested in aviation and aircraft systems. As an AME, it’s about improving airworthiness and safety through maintenance, inspection, and repair.
 Here are the steps to becoming an AME in India:
 
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Criteria
 The Directorate  General of Civil Aviation(DGCA) sets the eligibility criteria for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Colleges. The student should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or have completed a diploma in engineering with a specialization in mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering.
 
Step 2: Enrol in an AME Course
After meeting the eligibility criteria, you can enroll in an AME course offered by a DGCA-approved institution. AME courses are available in Gurugram, Bhubaneshwar, Jamshedpur, Guna, Bhopal, Mumbai, Pune, and Cochin. The students should choose a course or an aviation institute that suits their interests and career goals.
AME courses in DGCA Approved AME colleges have four streams to choose from: Mechanical B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, and B2 Avionics. Students can opt for one of their four AME streams and work in that stream in airline MRO workshops.
 
Step 3: Complete Training
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering colleges in India cover the fundamentals of aircraft maintenance, including aerodynamics, aircraft structures, propulsion systems, avionics, and maintenance practices. There will be classroom lectures and practical exercises.
The practical training involves working on real aircraft under the guidance of experienced AMEs. During this phase, students gain hands-on experience in aircraft maintenance, repair, and inspection.
 
 Step 4: Appear for the DGCA License Examination
After completing both basic and practical training, students appear for the DGCA licence examination. 
The written examination tests your knowledge of aircraft maintenance and measures your aptitude for AME.
 
Step 5: Obtain the DGCA License
Once the student passes the DGCA license examination, he/she receives the AME license from the DGCA. This license allows you to work as an AME in India.
 
Step 6: Gain Work Experience
After obtaining the DGCA license, you can start working as an AME. Many airlines, Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) companies, and aviation organizations hire AMEs in India.
