 What is aircraft maintenance engineering?

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a branch of aviation studies, which responsible for maintaining the airworthiness of an aircraft and its components. Different specializations are available depending on the type of engine used in an aircraft and the depth of the maintenance and repair work. AME professionals can work in commercial airlines, military aircraft, and private aircraft.

Ensuring that the aircraft is fit to fly is the primary responsibility of an AME professional. By conducting regular inspections, servicing, and maintenance tasks, it is decided that the aircraft is in optimal condition. The engine, landing gear, avionics, and other systems are inspected and repaired by the AMEs for ensuring the safety and airworthiness of an aircraft.

The AMEs should strictly follow the rules and regulations issued by the government and should keep a record of their troubleshooting and maintenance tasks. Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is a crucial part of aviation as they are dealing with the safety of the aircraft, passengers, and crew. 

AME professionals also diagnose and troubleshoot aircraft problems and issues, and recommend appropriate repairs and replacements as necessary. They must follow strict safety protocols and regulations, and maintain detailed records of all maintenance and repairs performed on an aircraft.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course Details

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course is designed to maintain the optimal condition of aircraft.  The branch covers avionics, airframe, engine and powerplant, and various parts of aircraft. It is a four-year course divided into 8 semesters. 

For applying to Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in India, the candidates should have completed 10+2 education in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) or they should have a Diploma in Aeronautics, Aeronautical, Mechanical, and Electrical.  

During the academic period, the students are trained in aircraft systems, maintenance procedures, rules, and regulations, troubleshooting, and preparing various parts of aircraft. The entire academic period is divided into two parts. The first two years are theoretical classes and the third and fourth years are practical training. After completing the training and clearing the DGCA exams the pass-outs can work in different roles in the aviation industry. The job profile can be aircraft maintenance engineers, avionics technicians, and quality control inspectors.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is divided into two branches; Mechanical and Avionics stream. 

Mechanical Stream: The maintenance and repair of the engine, airframes, and other mechanical parts of the aircraft are covered in the Mechanical stream. The students who are specialized in the Mechanical stream of AME have to ensure the mechanical components of the aircraft are in the optimal state.

Avionics Stream: The electronic and electrical systems including communication, navigation, and flight control systems are maintained and repaired by students who excel in the Avionics stream. The Avionics Engineers are responsible for ensuring the Airworthiness condition of the electric and electrical components of aircraft.
